Squid Oil vs Fish Oil – The Differences You Must Know Before Buying Your Omega-3!

There are some people who prefer getting the essential fat through their diet, but does not have any idea of the basic differences between the three most popular omega-3  sources – fish oil, krill oil and calamari oil. And for those who ask themselves; “what is calamari oil?”, it’s simple omega-3 fatty acids of squids. Yes, there is a new omega-3 player in town!

If you have done some research on the benefits of omega-3s, then you have read the benefits of krill oil and fish oil.

But there is a new source of omega-3 that is stirring up the market. Calamari or squid oil is the new player in town, running in third but it’s gaining its momentum and becoming one of the most popular sources of the essential fat. There is also a possibility that it can surpass fish and krill oil in popularity.

The levels of DHA in squid oil are higher and more potent as compared to fish oil thus the body can absorb more omega-3 for sustained health.

Calamari oil is manufactured from deep sea squid, it contains the same advantages as fish and krill oil but it was proven that it is 6 times more potent and richer in omega-3 fatty acids’ DHA and EPA.

Both DHA and EPA are responsible for enhanced brain development thus it will be more beneficial to anyone. Needless to say, this is a very important benefit that will want in your everyday lifestyle.

  • Krill is only harvested for their oil, leading to concerns of imbalance in marine food chain.
  • Fish oil is sourced from fish scraps and fish by-products and the more nutritious parts are for food.
  • Squids are harvested as a food source and for their oil, with no strings attached concerning food chain or other environmental issues.

If you think of it, you will get the best and purest form of omega-3 oils from squid as compared to krill and fish.

Experts stated that harvesting squid oil is more sustainable because squids are not caught using industrial sized nets by industrial sized ships. Catching them don’t damage the sea floor and corals. Squids are caught using lines and it does not affect the food chain or cause any imbalance.

Squid has a very low risk of collecting contaminants or toxins in their entire body because of their short life span.

What Is Fish Oil?

Fish oil is sourced from open ocean and cold water fish like salmon, tuna, mackerel, cod, shark and other fatty fishes. Fish oil is manufactured from fish trimmings and other fish byproducts!

Sounds nice, huh?

Well, maybe not and you should be aware that this way of manufacturing can result in low quality fish oils with low levels of omega-3s, specifically DHA and EPA.

These two nutrients are very important because they help in enhancing the nervous system and maintain the brain tissue and prevents it from deteriorating. Like I said earlier, the benefits of DHA and EPA are so important that you will want to have it as part of your healthy lifestyle.

Furthermore on the fish oil; open ocean fish are caught using large, industrial sized nets and industrial sized boats that plow the ocean floor to collect these fish. There are also worries of overfishing because the high demand for fish as a food source and for its oil.

Keep in mind that fish live longer as compared to squid. This means that high levels of toxin, contaminants and mercury can collect in their body which can be passed on to people who consuming them.

There are reports that contaminants like PCBs or polychlorinated biphenyls are still present in ocean waters. If you’re going for supplements, make sure that you purchase omega-3 fish oil that has gone through the molecular refining process. This is a process that lower the potential risks of these contaminants.

Eating fish is not bad, you just have to be careful about the source of your fish. Make sure that you’re getting high quality food grade fish products.

So, squid oil vs fish oil?

Well, squid oil gives the same health benefits to the human body. The difference is the potency of the two sources and how sustainable the sources are.

  1. Is 1250 mg of squid oil too much? That’s how much is in a CoQ10 product I take.

  3. I have been using black squid for over a year now, and get no damn fish burps from it.
    Very satisfied by the strength of the DHD and EPA, and its cheaper.
