So its 2013 and you made the promise to loose some weight. Getting started with weightloss can be tricky. Many articles recommend dieting and just about as many discourage it. Exercise is a widely accepted method of weight loss, but where do you start, and what kind of exercising is appropriate?
Are you ready to begin the quest? If you’re feeling dismayed about reaching your health goals this article is most likely exactly what you need to get you going.
Food
The first topic to address is consumption. Technically speaking, you could gain a hundred pounds or lose a hundred pounds without changing anything but your diet. Of course losing weight strictly with a diet change is not easy, but the point is, your diet is the most important factor to weight loss. You may be fighting yourself if you exercise and don’t watch what you eat. Exercising increases your metabolic rate, and in turn makes you hungrier. The only way you lose weight is if you burn more than you consume.
Burning Calories
An average adult burns roughly 2,000 calories a day. The amount you burn depends on your physique and activity levels. A simple search for a “calories burned per day calculator” will lead to you calculator that can determine a more accurate number for your body. As mentioned before, the key to weight loss is burning more calories than you consume. To lose a pound you need to burn 3,500 calories. This means if you ate 350 calories less than the number you burn everyday you would lose one pound in 10 days (350 calories is about one small milkshake). I strongly discourage eating any less than 500 calories under the number you burn daily. Not only can it cause too much stress on the body, but you will likely grow tired and quit. Let’s look at ways to increase the number of calories your body burns.
Exercise
Doing work (exercise) requires energy (calories). As you exercise, your body burns calories as a form of energy. The best type of exercise for weight loss is cardiovascular and aerobic exercise which include running and swimming. While going for a hard run once a week might help you kill a few hundred calories, a better approach is consistent exercise. Doing lighter exercise several times a week promotes a faster metabolic rate, which can increase the number of calories your body burns daily. A trick to raising your metabolic rate for the day is exercising in the morning. That goes without saying that you must still maintain your daily calorie allowance.
The Little Things Add Up (Additional Tips)
Another tip to raising your metabolic rate is drinking a glass of warm water with lemon juice in the morning. This will likely make you hungry, but again, you must monitor your consumption. Green tea similarly promotes weight loss. As apposed to the glass of lemon water, green tea does a better job if drunken throughout the day. Caffeine is a stimulant, as such it can serve as an appetite suppressant. Drinking coffee in the morning is an excellent way to calm your appetite. It can definitely even serve as a remedy to harsh cravings.

I’m still doing my intermittent fasting programme, which works brilliantly for me. I find coffee is great…and I’m about to try some matcha…

Great tips! It’s so easy to forget that small changes can have a huge impact on our bodies. I’ve started to eat better (again) in 2013. (I sort of fell off the health wagon for the latter part of 2012.) And starting Monday, I’m back into the Crossfit gym. Yay!
